Let’s be honest—“treat butter” is having a moment. Foodies everywhere are ditching the fancy oils and heading straight for the fridge for that one special block of golden goodness. Because sometimes, the little things—like a pat of really good butter—makes all the difference.
This summer, we’ve been taste-testing the very best organic butters we stock, ranking them on flavour, ethics, texture, and taste. Here’s how they stacked up.
1st Place: Berkeley Farm Organic Salted Butter £5.09/250g
Rating: 5/5
This one has royal approval—literally. Berkeley farms flagship butter is traditionally churned on a small, family-run Wiltshire farm, and it was once a regular in Prince Charles’ fridge. It’s everything butter should be: rich, mellow, grassy and beautifully salted. Slather it on a thick crust of toast and you’ll understand why it wins top marks from us every time.
2nd Place: South Downs Butter £3.39/180g
Rating: 4.5/5
South Downs is a butter for purists. The cream is aged for three days before churning, then washed in ice-cold water and packed by hand. It’s indulgent, smooth, and has the kind of depth you only get from slow, old-fashioned methods. With a Great Taste 3-Star Award under its belt, it’s no surprise we keep reaching for it. A butter with Sussex soul.
3rd Place: Calon Wen Organic Butter £4.65/250g
Rating: 4/5
Made with care by Welsh family farms, Calon Wen is as kind as it is delicious. Light and delicate, it’s ideal for baking (hello, perfectly layered croissants) or melting into mashed potatoes. Wrapped in compostable packaging and produced sustainably, it’s a great ethical all-rounder. The taste is subtle but satisfying—gentle, not showy.
4th Place: Yeo Valley Organic Salted Butter £3.35/200g
Rating: 3/5
The supermarket staple that does a bit of everything. Rich, creamy, and dependable, Yeo Valley’s salted butter is made from organic British milk and carries all the right ethical credentials. It’s a reliable choice for everyday use—great on toast, lovely in sauces—but lacks some of the nuance and handcrafted charm of the smaller producers. Solid, but not a showstopper.
Final Thoughts
Butter is one of those beautiful basics—just beaten cream and a touch of salt—but the difference between good and great is surprisingly vast. Whether you’re cooking up a storm or just buttering your morning toast, these butters all bring something special to the table. And as always, every pack you buy from us supports organic farming, ethical producers, and independent makers.
Butter isn’t just butter—it’s a beautifully simple expression of craftsmanship, care, and cream. Whether you’re slathering it on sourdough, folding it into pastry, or finishing a velvety sauce. Good butter makes all the difference.
